This weekend is the Plano Balloon Festival at Oak Point Park. It is one of my favorite events to attend in the D/FW area. So do you have weekend plans? If not, try this! It begins today at 4 pm and ends at 10 pm. Tomorrow it will be from 6 am to 10 pm and Sunday 6 am to 7 pm. There will be sky divers, bands, fireworks, a Kids Fun Zone, performance groups and of course BALLOONS! There will be 45 beautiful, colorful, gorgeous hot-air balloons. There will even be some special ones for the kids to enjoy!
Did you know the first hot-air balloon was made more than 200 years ago? Two men from Southern France began experimenting with paper and cotton balloons. They started by sending up some straw, a duck, a goose…then decided it was time for a man to try! After much discussion with the King, it was decided two convicts would take the first flight! If they survived they would be granted a royal pardon! It was hard work but they accomplished a 30-minute flight. After this success, another Frenchman wanted in on the hot-air balloon business and together they made a rubberized silk balloon that holds a basket. Only 10 days after the first triumph, a successful launch was made and the balloon soared to 1,800 feet in the air. And of course it went on and on….
Have you ever been in a hot air balloon? They are offering Tethered Balloon Rides that goes 20-30 in the air and hovers for a few minutes. One basket can hold 4-6 people.
