Have you ever heard of “Layaway Angel?”

The Holiday Season is upon us!

There is a trend among our generous friends and neighbors that I found out about a couple of years ago and it has become an annual “gift” from my family as well –  it is something truly amazing. Have you ever heard of “Layaway Angel?” If you haven’t heard of it before, you will be in for a surprise! It is such a sweet gesture and it really melts my heart. What residents will do, around the Holiday season, is go to a local retail business, like a Walmart or K-mart, and they will pay off customer’s layaway bills. Can you imagine how you would feel if you were the customer, struggling to pay off some Christmas presents, to find out they have been paid for by an anonymous donor or a neighbor in the area?

One donor in Northeast Ohio paid off over $100,000 worth of layaways at two different Walmart’s in the area. This helped more than 200 customers! Another donor in Pennsylvania, who likes to be called Santa B., paid off $158,000 to two different Walmart’s in his area, as well. Same story in Florida….donation of over $100,000. You get the picture now?

One article explains how a good Samaritan was raising money to pay off people’s layaway. She explained that when she went to the store the cashier got so excited! She went through her layaway list and wanted to make sure the children got the benefit first. The cashier took an hour to find toys that needed to pay off, with an average of $100 each. She even got to witness two customers show up to pay their balance and to then find out it was now at $0. One lady had tears in her eyes and gave the good Samaritan a huge hug and the other told her she had just helped her buy her daughter’s first bike!

One last story. Back in 2013, a terminally ill woman from Maine, wanted to do something nice before she died. She paid 16 family’s layaway bills at a local K-mart that were for school supplies. It totaled about $3,000. It was like “Christmas in September” for them!

Not all donations need to be this large and grand, don’t worry! If you go the website http://www.payawaythelayaway.org you can help by paying off a more reasonable donation. It takes you to their PayPal account and you can pick any amount you wish. They partner with Burlington Coat Factory, K-mart, Toys “R” Us and WalMart. An average contribution for the year 2015 was $30. But what it really is about is this: “That making an effort, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, is the only way to make a difference.” – Leigh M. Clark
